OggZCap

OggZCap is a Desktop-recording, Live-Streaming utility for Mac/OSX. It allows to select an area on the desktop to capture and generates a OGG/Theora video stream which is directly sent to the collider (icecast server).

You can download OggZCap from http://theartcollider.net/software/. The sourcecode is available from git://theartcollider.net/inout/

Usage

The user-interface of OggZCap is very intuitive:

  1. enter your project information (Name, Author, Tag and a short description) - using only Ascii Characters.
  2. (optionally) set the icecast-server parameters - here the default values should be just fine.
  3. select an area to use for the screen-cast, by clicking on the Set Capture Area button.

Drag the red popup window and confirm its new location with the pushbutting inside the window.

  1. click on “Start”.
  2. (optionally) enable “preview mode” by selecting the checkbox with the same name.

Troubleshoot

If everything worked fine, the “Start” button and Settings will be disabled until you press the “Stop” streaming. The stream will show up in the Project List after ~10 seconds delay.

If this is not the case, check:

  • Any messages in the Log Window?
  • is a stream with the same name already active?
  • do you have unusual characters in your project-name?
  • ask on the mailing-list for help.

Name & Pronunciation

I’ve been asked this quite a lot, so here it goes: Ogg-See-Cap.
Actually the “Z” was originally intended as alternate glyph for the version number two - promoted by kfish of xiph.net for his oggZtools. However the reference to “see” works even better for a screen-capture tool…
